WOJCIECH CHARCHALIS

Professor of literary studies at the Department of Portuguese Studies, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań. Translator from Spanish, Portuguese and English. He has translated more than 80 books, including those by José Saramago, António Lobo Antunes, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Javier Marías, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Carlos Cantaneda. For his translation of Fernando Pessoa’s ‘Heteronyms’, he was awarded the Wislawa Szymborska Prize (2022), for Juan Goytisolo’s ‘Macbara’ he received the Cervantes Institute Prize in Warsaw (2007), and his translation of Miguel Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” was named Book of the Year by the magazine “Ksiazki” (2014).

ANNA KORZENIOWSKA-BIHUN

Doctor of Humanities, graduate of the Faculty of Theatre Knowledge at the Theatre Academy in Warsaw (1997) and the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw (2004). Translator of Ukrainian literature and films in Ukrainian, Belarusian, Russian and English. She also translates drama texts, texts concerning broadly understood humanities, journalism and science. Lecturer of Polish as a foreign language.

PIOTR PAZIŃSKI 

Writer, philosopher, translator, journalist and literary scholar specialising in the works of James Joyce. He works on the philosophy of Judaism and the Jewish theme in literature. He was editor-in-chief of the journal Midrasz from 2000 to 2019. As a regular contributor to the Austeria publishing house, he led, among other things, the re-edition of Isaac Cylkov’s Hebrew Bible and the collected writings of Julian Stryjkowski. He is the author of translations from Hebrew and English of, among others, Lawrence Kushner’s ‘Book of Letters’, Amos Oz and Fania Oz-Salzberger’s essays ‘Jews and Words’, and short stories by Israeli Nobel laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon. He has published two volumes of his own prose : ‘The Boarding House’ (2009) and ‘Bird Streets’ (2013), as well as the essay collections ‘Rzeczywistość poprzecierana’ and ‘Atrapy stworzenia’.

ZOFIA SZACHNOWSKA-OLESIEJUK 

A graduate of English philology and translation studies at the University of Gdańsk, specialising in contemporary American literature and culture. Her translation output includes nearly 40 translations, covering both fiction and non-fiction. She also translates poetry texts and musical works. Since 2018, she has been working with the Musical Theatre in Gdynia, translating librettos of musicals. For several years, she has also been translating literary texts, poetry and film scripts from Polish into English. From 2018 to 2021, she served as secretary of the Northern Branch of the STL and has been its president since 2021.

ANNA WASILEWSKA
Chairperson

Romanist, translator and editor. Since 1979 she has been associated with ‘Literatura na świecie’, where she heads the section on French and Italian literature. She has published a volume of conversations ‘From Potocki to Perec. Five Conversations on French Literature’. She has been awarded, among others, the Silver and Gold Cross of Merit. She has translated works by, among others. She has translated works by Italo Calvin, Andrea Camilleri, Guido Piovene, Tommaso Landolfi, Alberto Moravia, Umberto Eco, Daria Fo, Ugo Betti, Eduardo de Filippo, Carl Emilio Gadda, Georges Perec, Raymond Queneau, Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Derrida, Jean Genet, Jean Echenoz, Francis Ponge, Albert Camus Awarded the Gdynia Literary Prize (2016) for her translation of Jan Potocki’s The Saragossa Manuscript.
