Gdańskie Spotkania Literackie

We invite you to get familiar with a film series “Wytłumaczenia” made by Sławomir Paszkiet for The Book Institute in cooperation with the Association of Literary Translators. The series was prepared within the PETRA project.
Its aim was to “release the translator from the shadow and demonstrate what an important role s/he plays in the process of assimilating foreign literature”.

Episode 1: Meeting with prof. Elżbieta Tabakowska – the Director of the UNESCO Chair for Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. English scholar; focuses her interests on cognitive linguistics and the theory of translation. Readers know her as a translator of popular books by Norman Davies.
Episode 2: Meeting with Magdalena Heydel, Ph.D., a Polish and English scholar, translation theorist, assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology of Literature and Culture Research at the Jagiellonian University. She's best known for her translations of books by Virginia Woolf and “The Heart of Dakness” by Joseph Conrad.
Episode 3: This episode is devoted to Rene and Wictoria Śliwowscy, translators and specialists in Russian history and literature. They translated e.g. Anton Chekhov’s and Andriej Płatonow’s works.
Episode 4: Meeting with prof. Jerzy Koch, a translator, literary scholar specializing in the Afrikaans language and literature, colonial, Dutch and South African literature.
Episode 5: Meeting with Sława Lisiecka, translator of literature in German. Together with her husband, Zdzisław Jaskuła, she translated e.g. "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Nietzsche.
